H.265

H.265, also known as HEVC, is the successor standard to H.264 for efficient video compression.

What this is about

The efficiency gain is real and matters most where bandwidth is expensive: 4K streaming, HDR delivery and long recordings on small cards. The catch is that the same efficiency comes from more complex analysis, so decoding needs newer hardware and encoding takes longer. Older browsers and editing setups may refuse the file outright, and its licensing situation is more tangled than H.264's. For a client review link, H.264 remains the safer choice; for a 4K master to a streaming platform, H.265 is often what the spec asks for.

A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.
