Negative Fill

What this is about

Outdoors on an overcast day, light arrives from every direction at once and a face ends up evenly lit and shapeless. Negative fill is the answer: a black floppy or a length of duvetyne set just out of frame on the shadow side absorbs the ambient bouncing back, and the cheekbone reappears. Inside a white-walled room the same trick controls the free bounce nobody asked for. It costs no power, no cable and no generator — only a stand, a sandbag and someone to place it, which makes it the fastest contrast tool a small crew has.

A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.

What runs differently here

In planning terms, that means:

• Negative fill removes light; a flag blocks a beam from reaching somewhere. The materials overlap, the intention does not.
• Distance controls the strength: the closer the black surface sits to the subject, the deeper the shadow side falls.
• On overcast exteriors it is often the only shaping tool available, since no lamp competes with a whole sky.
