Negative Fill
Negative fill is black material placed near a subject to absorb reflected light and make the shadow side darker.
What this is about
Outdoors on an overcast day, light arrives from every direction at once and a face ends up evenly lit and shapeless. Negative fill is the answer: a black floppy or a length of duvetyne set just out of frame on the shadow side absorbs the ambient bouncing back, and the cheekbone reappears. Inside a white-walled room the same trick controls the free bounce nobody asked for. It costs no power, no cable and no generator — only a stand, a sandbag and someone to place it, which makes it the fastest contrast tool a small crew has.
A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.
What runs differently here
In planning terms, that means:
- Negative fill removes light; a flag blocks a beam from reaching somewhere. The materials overlap, the intention does not.
- Distance controls the strength: the closer the black surface sits to the subject, the deeper the shadow side falls.
- On overcast exteriors it is often the only shaping tool available, since no lamp competes with a whole sky.

Why use negative fill instead of simply switching off the fill light?
Because outdoors there is no fill light to switch off. The sky and the ground do the filling, and only black material can take that away.
