Polarizer
A polarizing filter blocks light waves oscillating in one direction, which removes much of the reflected light from non-metallic surfaces.
What this is about
The polarizer does something no grading suite can redo: it removes a reflection before it is ever recorded. Car interiors shot through a windscreen, shop windows, wet streets and lake surfaces are the standard jobs, and a deeper blue sky comes along for free. The catch is geometry. The effect peaks at an angle to the surface and to the sun, so a camera that pans or a car that turns changes the strength of the filter mid-take. Wide lenses can also polarise a sky unevenly, leaving a dark band across one side of the frame.
A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.
What runs differently here
Where this differs from the general case:
- A polarizer typically costs one and a half to two stops, which has to be built into the lighting plan.
- Sky polarisation is strongest at ninety degrees to the sun and disappears when you shoot toward it or away from it.
- It barely touches reflections on bare metal, because metallic surfaces do not polarise light the same way.

Can a reflection be removed later instead?
Only with paint-out work that costs VFX days per shot. Rotating a filter on set takes a minute, which is why the polarizer stays in the matte box.

Can the results be exported?
