Super 35 is a sensor format derived from 35mm motion picture film, roughly 24.9 x 18.7mm in its full aperture.
What this is about
Most of cinema history was photographed on this frame, so Super 35 is the format audiences and lens designers grew up with. The world's rental inventory of cine glass covers it by definition, focal-length intuition — 18 wide, 32 normal, 85 tight — was formed on it, and depth of field at working stops stays manageable for focus pullers. When newer large-format cameras appeared, Super 35 stayed the pragmatic middle: deep enough lens catalog, proven workflows, and crop modes on nearly every modern body.
