Tungsten Light
Tungsten lighting comes from incandescent film fixtures burning at a nominal 3200 kelvin with a continuous spectrum.
What this is about
Tungsten is the reference every other source is measured against, because a glowing filament emits a genuinely continuous spectrum and therefore renders colours without gaps. Gaffers still reach for Fresnels when a scene needs a hard, controllable beam with clean cut edges. The cost side is blunt: most of the energy leaves as heat, so a tungsten package draws heavy current, warms a small location within minutes and can put an air-conditioning problem on the schedule. Dimming a tungsten head also warms the light noticeably, which is a useful effect for candlelight and a continuity trap everywhere else.
A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.
What runs differently here
Where this differs from the general case:
- The spectrum is continuous, so colour rendering is excellent and often used as the reference other sources are judged against.
- Dimming lowers the color temperature as well as the level, which is why scrims exist for pure intensity changes.
- Heat and current draw are real planning items: a tungsten package can outgrow the fusing of an ordinary location.

Is tungsten obsolete now that LED exists?
No. It remains the reference for colour rendering, and its hard controllable beam is still the reason Fresnels stay on many truck lists.
