Two constraints dominate a winter shoot, and both are arithmetic rather than opinion: short daylight and cold.
What this is about
The usable exterior window may be a handful of hours, so the schedule has to be built inside it rather than around a normal working day. Cold does the rest: it flattens batteries, stiffens hands, fogs glass when gear moves between cold and warm, and slows every setup by a margin that has to be planned rather than absorbed. Add condensation, wet ground and shortening tempers and the practical answer is always the same shape — fewer setups, more time for each, and a warm place close enough that people actually use it between takes.
The order matters more than the tools. Skip a step and you usually notice two steps later — by which point the fix costs several times as much.

- The exterior window is the schedule: in midwinter the usable light is short, and it fades earlier than the official sunset suggests.

Step by step
This order gets you there fastest:
- Look up sunrise and sunset for the actual date and location, then build the exterior blocks inside that window and move everything else indoors.
- Shoot the most important exterior first. Winter light usually degrades through the day, and an overcast afternoon rarely improves before it disappears.
- Double the battery plan: more cells than a summer day would need, carried in an insulated bag, with a charging point at the warm base.
- Prevent condensation deliberately — keep the camera in a sealed bag when moving from cold to warm, or leave it cold and work outside for the whole block.
- Arrange a warm base close to the location: a vehicle, a room, a heated tent. Then check how far people actually have to walk to reach it.
- Brief cast and crew on clothing, and solve the wardrobe problem: talent dressed for the shot needs cover between takes and shorter takes overall.
- Allow more time per setup than the summer version of the same plan. Gloves, cold fingers and slippery ground cost minutes on every single move.
- Check access and safety for the conditions: gritted paths, snow load on a roof, a track that becomes unreachable, and enough daylight left to strike the gear.
