Atmos (atmosphere) recordings capture the characteristic sound of a location as a continuous bed.
What this is about
Where room tone is neutral filler, atmos is character: the market's murmur, distant traffic, birds at the forest edge. Mixers lay atmos under scenes to glue picture and sound into one place, and to smooth cuts between takes shot hours apart. Recordists often capture atmos in stereo while lighting is being changed, so the takes cost no extra set time. Longer is better — loops shorter than a minute betray themselves.
A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.
