A briefing is the short document from client or director that tells the crew what the film has to achieve, for whom, and within which limits.

On commercial productions the briefing is the reference everyone argues from. The producer calculates the offer against it, the director answers it with a treatment, and when the client wants a third location in week two, someone opens the document and checks whether that was ever agreed. A vague briefing produces vague shot lists, so experienced producers push for measurable goals, a defined audience and hard facts like budget, deadline and usage rights before pre-production starts.
