What this is about
Global shutter removes an entire class of problems: propellers stay straight, strobes and muzzle flashes expose the full frame, LED walls hold their pattern, fast rigs stop wobbling. Productions that live in those situations — motorsport, aerials, concert and volume-stage work — spec it deliberately. The trade has historically been sensor performance: global designs gave up some dynamic range or sensitivity, which is why rolling sensors with very fast readout dominated cinema. Recent cameras narrow that gap, turning the choice into a per-project calculation.
A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.

- Global refers to when pixels are read, not to quality — it is a geometry guarantee, nothing more.
- Classic trade-off: global designs historically cost dynamic range or noise performance against rolling siblings.

Rarely. Modern fast-readout rolling sensors handle dialogue, dollies and ordinary movement invisibly. The requirement appears with strobes, fast rigs and LED volumes.
