What this is about

LED panels changed what a small crew can do in a real location. They run off a battery, produce little heat, dim across the whole range without shifting color and dial their temperature from candle warmth to daylight, which removes most gel work for interiors. Their weakness is reach: the same flat surface that makes them soft up close makes them weak at distance, so a panel is an interview and close-quarters tool rather than a unit for pushing a window from outside. Cheap fixtures also vary in color quality, which shows up on skin and in costume long before anyone reads a spec sheet.

A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.

What runs differently here

Where this differs from the general case:

• Battery operation and low heat make panels the practical choice in small rooms, cars and locations without power.
• Output falls off quickly with distance, so a panel rarely replaces a Fresnel or an HMI across a large space.
• Color quality varies widely between brands; test a fixture on skin before it is booked for a whole shoot.
