Spherical Lens

What this is about

Nobody says spherical until anamorphic enters the conversation; the word exists to mark the other side of that choice. Spherical glass is lighter, faster, focuses closer, flares less theatrically and costs less to rent — which is why the vast majority of productions shoot it. Widescreen ratios are then achieved by cropping the sensor rather than squeezing the optics. When a DP compares a spherical and an anamorphic package for the same script, the trade is look against light, weight, minimum focus and money.

A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.

What runs differently here

Where this differs from the general case:

• Spherical does not mean boring: vintage spherical sets flare, glow and swirl plenty — just without ovals.
• 2.39:1 is available spherically by cropping; you spend sensor height instead of optical squeeze.
• Spherical packages are the pragmatic default for handheld, gimbal and drone work because of weight and speed.
