Talent Release

What this is about

The release is what a broadcaster, a platform or a client's legal department asks for before anything goes out. It names the production, the media and territories, how long the material may run, and whether the footage may be edited or used in advertising. Minors sign through a guardian. Recognisable passers-by are a separate question that depends on the situation and the country, which is why crews post notices at the perimeter. Losing a release means losing the shot, and there is no grade or crop that fixes consent.

A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.

What runs differently here

Where this differs from the general case:

• A talent release covers a person; a location release covers a place. A shoot in someone's flat usually needs both documents.
• Consent has to be specific: media, territory and duration written out, because a blanket permission is the first thing challenged.
• Collect releases on the day, at the set, before wrap. Chasing signatures weeks later is how projects miss delivery.
