Most interview lighting goes wrong before a single lamp is unpacked, at the moment someone chooses the seat. Get the seat right and a small kit does the rest.

Speed comes from sequence, not from haste: background first, ambient light second, added light last. A seat with a deep, tidy background and a window at the right angle needs one soft source and some negative fill. A seat chosen carelessly needs four lamps to fight the room — and loses. Photograph what works; the second interview of the series should take half the time of the first.

The order matters more than the tools. Skip a step and you usually notice two steps later — by which point the fix costs several times as much.

Step by step

This order gets you there fastest:

  1. Choose the seat before unpacking anything: depth behind the subject, no doors or foot traffic in frame, a window usable as a side source, and a wall you can darken if needed.
  2. Control the ambient first. Kill overhead fluorescents that flatten faces, curtain windows that fight your angle, and keep the one ambient source that helps.
  3. Set one soft key slightly above eye level, off to the interviewer's side. Bigger and closer stays softer; start closer than feels reasonable and back off.
  4. Shape with negative fill on the shadow side instead of a fill light. A face with one readable shadow side looks intentional; a face lit flat from both sides looks like a webinar.
  5. Separate the subject from the background: a practical lamp in the depth, a slash of light on the wall, or a subtle hair light. One of the three, not all of them.
  6. Expose for the face and let the background fall where it wants within reason. Check skin on the actual camera, then check the glasses for reflections and adjust the key height.
  7. Photograph the finished setup with positions and settings noted. The next interview in this series is a rebuild, not a redesign — that is where the speed comes from.
