Shoot in low light
Low light punishes improvisation more than any other condition. The camera that looked fine at the office reveals its true character at the evening event — and by then the client is watching.
What this is about
Dark scenes fail in two opposite ways. Underexpose and lift later, and shadows dissolve into churning noise. Blast work lights at everything, and the atmosphere the scene was booked for is gone. The craft lies between: expose generously within the camera's honest range, keep light sources visible in frame so brightness feels motivated, and place your subject where the existing light already works. All of that presumes one unglamorous act — testing the camera in comparable darkness before the shoot day, so the limits are known numbers instead of set-day discoveries.
The order matters more than the tools. Skip a step and you usually notice two steps later — by which point the fix costs several times as much.
What runs differently here
Where this differs from the general case:
- Test the camera's usable sensitivity in real darkness before the day — the spec sheet lies politely, your own footage does not
- A visible lamp in frame buys you brightness the audience accepts; light from nowhere reads as fake
- Fast lenses help, but moving the subject two meters toward the window is free and often better
- Protect the shadows for the grade: crushed to black on set stays black forever
Step by step
This order gets you there fastest:
- Test before the day: shoot the actual camera in darkness comparable to the location, grade the clips, and decide the sensitivity ceiling you will not cross. Write it on tape on the monitor if you must.
- Scout the location after dark or with lights off. Existing practicals, windows, machine displays and exit signs are your set dressing and your motivation — map where they are.
- Bring fast glass and discipline: open apertures buy light and lose depth of field, so plan focus more carefully than usual and slow the blocking down accordingly.
- Position subjects near existing sources first, then add your own light dimmed low and bounced or diffused, matched in color to what the room already does.
- Expose using false color or the histogram, not the eye — monitors flatter in dark rooms. Keep faces safely up the scale and let the deep background stay dark on purpose.
- Watch white balance where sources mix: street sodium, LED panels and screens in one frame will fight. Decide on set which source wins; correcting three temperatures later means choosing one anyway.
- Zoom into recorded takes on the spot to check noise in shadows and focus on eyes. Low light hides both failures on a small bright monitor and reveals them on the client's TV.
- Log which setups ran at the sensitivity ceiling so post knows where noise reduction will be needed — a marked clip gets treated, an unmarked one gets discovered.

- Underexposing 'to fix it in the grade' and delivering shadows full of crawling noise
- Trusting autofocus in the dark, where it hunts exactly when the moment happens
- Mixing three color temperatures in one frame and deciding none of them

Is it better to add light or raise sensitivity?
Position and motivate first, then raise sensitivity within your tested ceiling, then add light that imitates what the room already does. Reaching for the big lamp first is how atmosphere dies.

Small bright monitors in dark rooms flatter shadows, and noise lives in shadows. Zoom in on set, use false color, and judge exposure by tools rather than by a screen your eyes have adapted to.
