Boom Mic
A boom mic is a directional microphone on a pole, positioned just above or below the frame.
What this is about
The boom operator follows dialogue by pointing the mic at whoever speaks, riding the frame line the camera sets. Because the mic sits farther from the mouth than a lavalier, it captures a more natural voice with a sense of the room — which is why most mixes prefer boom when both were recorded. The trade-off is logistics: the operator needs to see frame lines, avoid lighting shadows, and hold position through long takes.
A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.

Record both when you can. Boom is usually the first choice in the mix for its natural sound; lavaliers cover wide shots and movement the boom cannot follow.
