Last Light

What this is about

It is the only deadline on a set that cannot be negotiated, and everyone plans against it. The AD orders the exterior list by importance, the DoP says how far the day can be pushed, and around mid-afternoon the phrase we are losing the light starts appearing on the radio. What actually happens is triage: the master and the essential coverage are secured, the nice-to-have angles fall away, and remaining details move indoors or to another day. Productions that want to continue have to bring a lighting package and accept a night rate.

A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.

What runs differently here

In planning terms, that means:

• Last light is not sunset: usable light continues for a while afterwards, and how long depends on cloud, season and horizon.
• The blue hour sits inside that remainder, which is why the final exterior of the day is often a twilight shot by default.
• Decide the cut line before lunch. Deciding at the last moment means losing the important shot instead of the optional one.
