Sunrise Shot

What this is about

Everything about it is decided before the sun arrives. The recce establishes where on the horizon it will come up, ideally at the same time of year, because the point moves along the horizon through the seasons. On the day the framing is locked, filtration is on, the exposure plan is agreed, and a second camera often runs a wider version as insurance. Once the sun clears the horizon the contrast jumps within minutes, so anything not rolling by then belongs to the next morning.

A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.

What runs differently here

Where this differs from the general case:

• First light precedes it, golden hour follows it: the sunrise shot itself is the narrow moment the disc breaks the horizon.
• The sunrise point shifts along the horizon across the year, so a scout in March does not describe a shoot in July.
• Plan filtration and exposure in advance — the brightness range between sky and foreground is at its most extreme here.
