Without this permission a project cannot legally appear on your website, and the reference is half the reason many shops take a job at a modest rate. Grant it in the production contract and pass it down to the crew, because a freelancer showing a clip needs the client consent, not only the producer approval. Sensible wording sets a start date tied to publication, limits use to own channels and pitch material, and rules out re-cuts. Internal films, unreleased campaigns and anything under confidentiality usually stay out, and people on camera may have set their own limits in the release form.

A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.

What runs differently here

Where this differs from the general case:

• The right is not automatic: without a clause the client can demand the case study goes offline
• Tie the start to the public release date so a reference never breaks an embargo
