Prime Lens
A prime lens is a lens with one fixed focal length that cannot zoom.
What this is about
Narrative crews often carry a matched prime set — say 25, 35, 50 and 85mm — instead of one zoom. Each focal length is a deliberate camera position, and each change is a physical swap the 1st AC performs. That costs minutes, so scenes get grouped by lens in the schedule. In return, primes deliver more speed for night work, less glass in front of the sensor and a consistent character across the whole set. The primes-versus-zoom decision is made in prep, with the rental order — not on the day.
A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.
What runs differently here
Where this differs from the general case:
- Primes of a given class are typically one to two stops faster than comparable zooms — the margin that owns night exteriors.
- A swap takes a practiced 1st AC two to five minutes; thirty swaps add up to an hour of shooting day.
- Matched sets keep color and contrast consistent across focal lengths; mixed glass rarely cuts together unnoticed.

Why choose primes when one zoom covers the range?
Speed, size and rendering. A T1.5 prime shoots scenes a T2.9 zoom cannot, and fixed focal lengths force cleaner blocking decisions.
