Production Sound
Production sound is all audio recorded live on set, from dialogue to room tone.
What this is about
A sound recordist and boom operator capture dialogue as cleanly as possible while the camera rolls. Good production sound saves days of ADR and cleanup later; bad production sound is among the most expensive problems to fix in post. That is why sound gets a voice in location scouting — traffic, air conditioning, and echoing rooms all end up on the dialogue track. The recordist logs every take in a sound report so post can find the usable ones.
A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.
What runs differently here
In planning terms, that means:
- Scout locations with ears as well as eyes — hum, traffic, and reverb are cheaper to avoid than to remove
- Record room tone at every location; the dialogue edit will depend on it
- Give the boom operator a rehearsal — frame lines and lighting decide where the mic can go
