Street Casting

What this is about

Fashion, documentary-styled commercials and music videos live on it: skaters at the park, a real baker, a face with a history that no agency file contains. The trade-off shows up on the shooting day. Non-professionals rarely hit the same mark twice, they tire faster under repetition, and nobody has explained to them what a buyout is. Good street casting therefore budgets a scout, a proper conversation about usage and fee, a short trial in front of a camera, and a director who blocks the scene around the person instead of against them.

A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.

What runs differently here

In planning terms, that means:

• Explain usage, territory and duration in plain language before anyone signs — informed consent is the whole point of the release.
• Street casting is not extras casting: extras fill a background, street cast people carry a shot and are directed like cast.
• Schedule a buffer. People without film experience cancel, arrive late or change their mind about being on camera.
