What this is about

Every real location hums. Ventilation, refrigerators, traffic, a server room behind drywall, the espresso machine two rooms away — none of it registers consciously until you listen through headphones, and all of it sits under every take forever. Post can reduce steady noise at a cost and can do almost nothing about noise that changes. So the work happens on location, in this order: hear the room, silence what can be silenced, position microphones close, and monitor every take as if you were the audience. The habit costs minutes; skipping it costs the film.

The order matters more than the tools. Skip a step and you usually notice two steps later — by which point the fix costs several times as much.

What runs differently here

Where this differs from the general case:

  • Scout locations with your ears: two minutes of silent listening in the actual room reveals more than any tech list
  • A refrigerator you unplugged is remembered by the car keys you put inside it — the trick is old because it works
  • Distance is the enemy: a mediocre microphone at arm's length beats an excellent one across the room
  • Room tone recorded at the location saves hours of editing pain later; thirty seconds of everyone standing still is enough

Step by step

This order gets you there fastest:

  1. Listen before you book: stand silent in the room during the recce, at the same time of day as the shoot, and write down every sound you hear. Ask what switches off and who has the key.
  2. Silence the room before first rehearsal: HVAC off or scheduled, fridges unplugged with your keys inside, phones of everyone present to airplane mode, a sign on the door.
  3. Rig two paths for anything spoken: a lavalier on the person and a boom overhead. When one path catches clothing rustle or a hit, the other saves the take without anyone noticing.
  4. Set levels on real speech, not on 'say something' mumbling — people are louder in the take. Leave headroom for laughter and emphasis instead of riding the limiter.
  5. Monitor on closed headphones through every single take, not just at setup. The plane, the cough, the chair creak — you either hear it now or you meet it in the edit.
  6. Interrupt confidently when sound breaks a take. A retake costs ninety seconds on set; the same sentence patched in post costs an afternoon and never sounds quite right.
  7. Record thirty seconds of room tone in every setup before striking it, announced out loud so the set actually freezes. Label it to the scene it belongs to.
  8. Hand over sound with names that match the picture files, plus a note of known issues per take. The editor's first hour with your material sets their opinion of your set.

Common pitfalls

What most often goes wrong in practice:

  • Trusting the camera's built-in microphone as anything more than a sync reference
  • Checking sound at setup and then never again while the room slowly wakes up
  • Discovering the ventilation cycle in the edit because nobody listened through a full take

Lav or boom — which one if I can only rig one?

For interviews and controlled scenes, the boom sounds more natural if someone can operate it well. Unattended or moving subjects favor the lav. The honest answer is both, because failure modes differ.

Can noise be fixed in post?

Steady broadband noise can be reduced, at the price of artifacts on voices. Intermittent noise — doors, planes, colleagues — essentially cannot. Treat post as a seatbelt, not a driving style.

How long does it take to get started with TillyGen?
