A gimbal is a motorised three-axis stabiliser that keeps the camera level while the person carrying it moves.

What this is about

A gimbal replaces skill with motors, and that is both the appeal and the limit. Balancing takes a few minutes, anyone with strong arms can carry it, and the resulting move is very smooth — smooth enough that the footage often reads as gliding rather than as a person walking. It has become standard for corporate, music video and second-unit work, and for tight spaces where a track cannot be laid. Practical constraints remain: focus and iris need remote control since nobody can reach the lens, battery runtime is finite, and holding a loaded rig at arm level is exhausting after a few takes.

A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.

What runs differently here

Where this differs from the general case:

  • Stabilisation is electronic, so payload limits, balancing and battery life are the practical planning constraints.
  • Focus must run through a wireless follow focus, because the operator's hands are on the handles rather than the lens.
  • The motion reads as machine-smooth; when a scene wants human weight in the move, a Steadicam or handheld fits better.
