Handheld describes operating without a stabiliser, so the camera follows the body of the person carrying it.
What this is about
Handheld is a decision about honesty in the frame. Gimbal and Steadicam remove the body from the image; handheld keeps it, so the audience feels a presence following the action. The costs are physical and human: a shoulder rig is heavy after a long day, focus is harder as the distance keeps shifting, and the style has to be consistent across a scene rather than used to save one setup.
A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.
What runs differently here
Where this differs from the general case:
- Handheld is the only one of the three carried options with no stabilisation at all, which is exactly what makes it read as human.
- It is the fastest camera setup on a set, since nothing has to be balanced, levelled or laid on the floor.
- Wide lenses hide handheld movement; long lenses amplify it until the shot becomes unusable without support.
