Most shots in most films are on sticks, which makes the head the most used piece of support on the truck. Its damping is what separates a professional pan from a nervous one: resistance builds as the operator pushes, so the move eases in and eases out instead of snapping. A counterbalance setting matched to the camera weight holds the tilt wherever it is left, and a levelling ball fixes the horizon in seconds on an uneven floor.
