Location Scouting

What this is about

A scout comes back with more than pretty pictures. Each option is documented with wide photos from several positions, the compass direction, the time of day the picture was taken, the noise situation, the power available, parking, the name of whoever can say yes, and a rough idea of what access will cost. That package lets a director and a producer decide together instead of falling in love with one photograph. Options usually go from a long list to three, then to one, and the loser stays warm as a backup until the paperwork is signed.

A term only helps when everyone on set means the same thing by it — so what follows is how it is used, not a dictionary definition.

What runs differently here

Where this differs from the general case:

• Photograph a location at the hour you would shoot it: the same room is a different set at nine in the morning and at four.
• Scout for the crew too — a perfect facade with no parking and a fourth-floor walk-up costs half a shooting day.
• A location is only real once someone with authority has said yes in writing; until then it stays an option.
